Reuters recently reported that lawmakers in Mexico are considering legislation that would create temporary marriage licenses as a solution to the rising number of divorces. According to the report, statistics show that in Mexico most divorces occur within the first two years of marriage. In Mexico City, the nation’s capital, the divorce rate is currently at 50%.
As a result, the temporary marriage licenses would be granted for a period of at least two years. At the conclusion of the two years, the couples can let the license expire or renew it for a new period of the couple’s choosing. Reuters explained that the “contract would include provisions on how children and property would be handled if the couple splits.”
