PaPUC Approves Acquisition of Wastewater System in East Norriton Township, Montgomery County, by Aqua PA Wastewater Inc.

puc_sealThe Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) or (Commission) today, May 21, 2020, approved an acquisition application of Aqua Pennsylvania Wastewater Inc. (Aqua) for Aqua’s purchase of East Norriton Township’s (East Norriton) wastewater system assets in Montgomery County.

The Commission voted 4-0 to approve a Joint Petition for Settlement of All Issues for the transfer of East Norriton’s  wastewater system assets to Aqua, as recommended by Administrative Law Judge Angela T. Jones.  The transaction has a purchase price of $21 million, per the joint settlement agreed to by Aqua, the PUC’s independent Bureau of Investigation & Enforcement, the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate, the Pennsylvania Office of Small Business Advocate and East Norriton Township.

The wastewater system currently provides service to nearly 5,000 customers in Montgomery County.

Aqua Pennsylvania Wastewater Inc. filed an application on July 30, 2019, requesting PUC approval of its acquisition of the wastewater system assets of East Norriton and approval of the ratemaking rate base of these assets as determined by Sections 1102 and 1329 of the Public Utility Code (Code).  Aqua also requested approval of contracts, including assignments of contracts pursuant to Section 507 of the Code.

As operator of 37 wastewater treatment plants throughout the Commonwealth, Aqua provides wastewater utility service to approximate 28,000 customers in Adams, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Clarion, Clearfield, Delaware, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Schuylkill, Venango, and Wyoming counties.

Aqua and its parent company, Aqua Pennsylvania, Inc. are subsidiaries of Aqua America, which provides water and/or wastewater service to approximately three million customers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Indiana, and Virginia – including services to over 430,000 customers across thirty-two counties in Pennsylvania.
